Sonrisa Salvaje is the holy grail of hoke. When you dig up an album of sea chanteys sung barbershop quartet style by William Shatner, Mr. T, Hervé Villechaize and Roger Moore, call me. Until then David Lee Roth’s Spanish version of Eat ’Em and Smile will be camp champ supreme. But being campy doesn’t stop it from being fuckin' great. Recently issued on CD for the first time – the original vinyl and cassette album was quickly deleted from Warner’s catalogue – “Sonrise Salvage” has hair metal’s best band (guitarist Steve Vai, bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Gregg Bissonette) and Roth stumbling through “Asi Es La Vida” (“That’s Life”) like some manic Spanglish Sinatra. Como que no se puede amar?

This guy is guilty of nothing but bad timing.. if he'd been a little later, he'd be either the biggest star on Vegas, or the best morning DJ in the world right now..
Hello Gottleib. Phil here. Lucky me...checking out your blog for the first time...popping my cherry I suppose.....and I see the first album (actually cassette tape) that I ever bought. Ever. And I don't mean "Eat 'Em and Smile," I mean, "Sonrisa Salveje." Purely accidental and I was ridiculed good for it by the older elite youths on my block--those who had already graduated to RUSH and were smoking, drinking and chasing women--you know, 7th graders. One of the most important tapes of...what would that be....5th grade....I haven't done the math but once I actually got the english cassette, I would go on to do many wonderful things, one of which was study for some grade school science test. I have a very fond memory of memorizing that protons had a positive charge, electrons negative and neutrons, well, they have no charge at all....... to the music of Yankee Rose. It worked with the chorus lyrics - trust me.
David Lee Roth nugget #2: I have a friend who grew up in LA across the street from Roth's house. Yes, they were filthy rich and no, she never met him. I'm sure it was one of his 28 houses.

Nice Phil. Way to rock my blog. What a glorious album it is. In Spanglish or English. - Jed
